Nigerian Players Abroad: London boys Iwobi and Aina on target in England and Italy respectively

Brought up in London, the roving that comes with careers in football saw long-time friends Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina scoring in different leagues. 

In this round-up, we take a look at how Iwobi, Aina and a host of Nigerian players performed in Europe over the weekend. 

In England 

We start from the Premier League where Iwobi was on target for Arsenal in their 2-1 away win at Huddersfield on Saturday, February 9. Iwobi scored Arsenal first goal of the game in the 16th minute to help them back to winning ways. That was the third Premier League goal of the season for the Nigerian.

Super Eagles midfielder played the whole 90 minutes for Leicester City where were beaten 3-1 by Tottenham at Wembley. 
His compatriot and teammate Kelechi Iheanacho was a second-half substitute in the game. 


Going down a division, Super Eagles captain Mikel John Obi played the full 90 minutes of Middlesbrough’s 1-1 draw at home to second-place Leeds United

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi was deployed as a defensive midfielder again and played the who 90 minutes of Rotherham’s 1-1 home draw with Wigan Athletic
Nigerian midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo played the whole 90 minutes as Stoke City were beaten 1-0 at home by West Brom. 

In Turkey 

Although he didn’t find himself on the scoresheet, Super Eagles forward Henry Onyekuru was impressive for Galatasaray in their 3-1 home win over Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super League. It was Onyekuru who got a penalty that Galatasaray scored their first goal from. The Nigerian played the who 90 minutes of the game. 
His compatriot Anthony Nwakaeme was also involved in the game and helped set up Trabzonspor’s only goal of the game. He also played the whole 90 minutes of the game. 
Victor Moses was a second-half substitute for Fenerbahรงe again but he could not make an impact as his side were beaten 1-0 by host Kayserispor
Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem was an asset for Rizespor who were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Antalyaspor. The 22-year-old was solid again in his second league start for Rizespor. 
His compatriot and teammate Azubuike Okechukwu was also on from the start before he was taken off in the second half. 
Shehu Abdullahi continues his gradual return from injuries and played a few minutes for Bursaspor who were beaten 2-0 at Besiktas

In Italy 

National allegiance was put aside when Aina’s Torino hosted and William Troost-Ekong’s Udinese in the Serie A. It was Aina’s goal that separated both sides. While Aina was taken off in the second half by Torino, Troost-Ekong played the whole 90 minutes for the host.

In Spain 

Youngster Samuel Chukwueze was on the bench from the start as struggling Villarrealmanaged a goalless draw away at Valladolid. He was introduced in the second half but could not find a goal for his side. 
Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo continued his good form for Leganes who got an impressive 3-0 win over Real Betis in the La Liga. Omeruo played the who minutes of the encounter and was a rock in Leganes defence once again. He was given a booking in the game. 

In Belgium

Super Eagles’ forward, Taiwo Awoniyi was on target for Royal Excel Mouscron who battled to a 2-1 away win over his parent club, KAA Gent. On loan at Royal Excel Mouscron, Awoniyi showed Gent what they are missing by scoring against them, giving his side the lead with a header late in the first half. 
Victor Osimhen played the whole 90 minutes as Charleroi beat Oostende in a Belgian Pro League game. 

In Germany 

Super Eagles left-back Jamilu Collins played the whole 90 minutes for Paderborn in their 2-1 win over Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga (German second division.)

In Israel

Hapoel Beer Sheva continued their woeful title defence with a 1-0 loss away at Hapoel Tel Aviv in a game that had Nigeria international John Ogu playing the whole 90 minutes.
