Former Head of state calls for public efforts to tackle social injustice.

The former head of state Alhaji Abdulsalami Abubakar, has called for a collective efforts and public engagement of ethnic, religion and theology in order to address the social injustice in the interest of peace and National development.

Abubakar made the call on Monday in Keffi while declaring open  the 2nd Annual International Conference  with the theme “Islam, Social Justice and Sustainable Development in Nigeria”  organized by the faculty of Islamic Studies, Nasarawa state Univeristy, Keffi, Nasarawa state.

Represented by the former minister of Finance Alh. Ismail  Usman,Abubakar urged the Islamic scholars to provide workable solutions to the problems of social injustice in the country so that peace and security is guaranteed.

According to him, “Religion should therefore be one of the vehicles to be used in entrenching unity in diversity as it launches man in to wide horizons of truth and goodness acquainting him with God and the rest of the universe.
The former head of state identified some of the social injustices observed to be perpetrated in Nigeria include bribery and corruption, tribalism, nepotism, discrimination, poverty,youth restiveness and poor education quality among others.
“We struggle to keep Nigeria one and to a large extent, promote its unity and oneness regardless of our  ethno-cultural and religious diversity. Therefore whatever s morally justified to keep Nigeria together as one indivisible and indissoluble nation such as the theme of this significant conference is cherished and embraced.
“This conference should therefore ensure that that issues on social justice and sustainable development in the glorious Qur’an and Sunnah that will move Nigeria forward are brought to lime light.
“These social injustices in Nigeria call for public engagement of religion and theology aimed at creating critical consciousness in the citizenry in order to these issues of social injustice, when they are addressed, Nigeria will be transformed  in to a peaceful nation.
“Therefore, I urge this conference to look in to these observations to find out the real cause of social injustice in Nigeria with a bid to finding workable solutions to such problems from the Islamic paradigm,” he said.
The former head of state urged Nigerians to continue to live in peace and tolerate one another for the overall development of the country.
Earlier,Dr.Abdullahi Adamu Suliaman, the Head of Department of the Islamic Studies said that the conference was organized in order to look at issues and provide solutions to challenges of social justice and sustainable development in the country.
“A total of 176 abstracts (125 in English and 51 Arabic) were received and printed in e-Book of Abstract and 80 papers(54 in English and 26 in Arabic) which have met our deadline have also been published  in the e-Book of proceedings of the conference,” he said
The Head of Department reinstated the commitment of the department to continue to key in to good policies and programmes that have direct bearing on the lives of Nigerians.
News Now reports that Islamic scholars including Prof.Ishaq Oloyede,the Registrar of JAMB,Alhaji Ahmadu Aliyu Ogah,the Andoma of Doma in Nasarawa state among others top dignitaries attended the conference  as the conference also featured different papers presentation.
