Over 30 Fulani women, children killed in attack by ethnic militia group

Mass burial of victims

At least 30 women and children in Fulani communities were killed allegedly by a Bachama militia group in Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Monday, November 20, 2017.

The armed gang allegedly launched their brutal attacks on settlements in Shafaran, Shawal, Gumara, Kikam and Kadamti villages in the area, with eyewitnesses reporting that they chanted war songs.
The attack was confirmed by the spokesperson of Adamawa Police Command, Othman Abubakar, who said investigations have already commenced.
"Thirty Fulani children and women were killed during the attacks in Numan villages by suspected Bachama farmers and already investigation has commenced to arrest the suspects.
"We were told the attackers hailed from the affected areas. We are on the top of the situation and already investigations have commenced to fish out those involved," he said.
According to the North East chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), Mafindi Danburam, 45 bodies were buried, with many still missing.
He said, "We have just observed the funeral rites of 45 bodies of women and children here in Numan. We are still searching for the remaining missing people.
"We want government to, as matter of urgency, swing into action by investigating those involved so as to avoid reprisal."
The Adamawa State Deputy Governor, Martins Babale, visited Numan on Tuesday, November 21, and condemned the attack while also calling for calm heads to prevail.
"The culprits would be brought to book and whoever is involved will not be spared, so lets learn to live in peace," he said.
While the reason for the attack remains unclear, Danburam said that Bachama youths had been threatening herdsmen in the area.
He further revealed that the district head of Numan had earlier summoned Fulani leaders and ordered them to leave his domain, with pleas falling on deaf ears.
